Was College Worth It? (warning: about $$$)
I know that for many people talking about money is taboo. The only reason I'm blogging about this is because I know it's possible some of you are in the same boat...
Today as I'm reapplying for IBR (income based repayment) for my student loans, I'm having a thought that I often have..."was college worth this?" I know my husband wonders this at times too because his student debt is astronomical. However, he is about to further his education and prepare to do something he has felt God has truly called him to do.
I went to Bible college and got a BA in...Bible. My minor was in Music. What is my job? I'm a receptionist. Don't get me wrong, I'm not complaining about my job or where I am. I'm very thankful that I have a job. I'm just wondering...was it worth thousands in loans to get a piece of paper I'm not using, 7 years after graduation? I've said it before that if I hadn't gone to that school, I might not have met Norm, so of course it was worth it in that aspect. I also had some phenomenal professors that changed my life and I made some lifelong friends that helped me to become more open minded and made a mark on my life that will last forever. So when it comes to the experience, it was absolutely worth it. It's just hard to be reminded of the debt I now have that will haunt me for who knows how long as I continue to reapply for IBR and the interest adds up.
Obviously we have no "college fund" for our kids. Sometimes I feel like a horrible person and irresponsible for taking out so many loans for my own education that I now cannot save for my children's. I know one thing for sure, I will pray that they receive scholarships and choose to go somewhere that doesn't cost an arm and leg. I will also encourage them to get a degree in something practical that they can actually get a job related to it. Some of you went to school with me and are in awesome jobs, have started your own business (I am so amazed by you Jess Palmer), and are still pursuing the dreams you began school with. I know I'm sounding very pessimistic...but I'm just thinking out loud.
